The Encyclical Letter of Saint Mark of Ephesus

St. Mark the Eugenicus: "I will never do this whatever may happen." [On the table: "Terms of Union of Latins and Orthodox. In Florence in 1439."]

July 1444

To All Orthodox Christians on the Mainland and in the Islands.

From Mark, Bishop of the Metropolis of Ephesus—Rejoice in Christ!

To those who have ensnared us in an evil captivity—desiring to lead us away into the Babylon of Latin rites and dogmas—could not, of course, completely accomplish this, seeing immediately that there was little chance of it. In fact, that it was...

Another brother asked Abba Sisoes, “I have fallen, Abba; what shall I do?” The elder said to him, “Get up again.” The brother said, “I have gotten up again, but again have I fallen.” The elder said, “Get up again and again.” So the brother asked, “How many times?” The elder replied, “Until you are taken up either in virtue or in sin. For a man presents himself to judgment in that state in which he is found.

Charity is not easily provoked, whilst you are often provoked. Mind, the enemy at this time uses his craft against you, for during anger faith in God is extinguished, and boldness before God is lost.

The help of God is always ready and always near, but is given only to those who seek and work, and only to those seekers who, after putting all their powers to the test, cry out with their whole heart: 'Lord help us!'

It is sometimes well during prayer to say a few words of our own, breathing fervent faith and love to the Lord. Yes, let us not always converse with God in the words of others, not always remain children in faith and hope; we must also show our own mind, indite a good matter from our own heart also. Moreover, we grow too much accustomed to the words of others and grow cold in prayer. And how pleas ing to the Lord this lisping of our own is, coming directly from a believing, loving, and thankful heart. It is impossible to explain this: it is only needful to say that when you are praying to God with your own words the soul trembles with joy, it becomes wholly inflamed, vivified, and beatified. You will utter few words, but you will experience such blessedness as you would not have obtained from saying the longest and most touching prayers of others, pronounced out of habit and insincerely.

Christianity's Roots in Georgia

Given the role that the Orthodox Church of Georgia is likely to play at the Pan Orthodox Council, this little video is a timely introduction for all of us:

The Faith of the Republic of Georgia

~ It was famed novelist John Steinbeck, who while traveling through the Soviet Union in 1947, referred to Georgia as a kind of second heaven. No, we are not talking about the state in the U.S., but the Republic of Georgia! Once part of the Communist empire and often called the “Riviera of the Soviet Union” the country of Georgia nestles between the Caucasus Mountains and the Black Sea. With the help of Georgian cameraman Giorgi Shermazanashvili and Henrick Weber, CBN News Senior International Correspondent George Thomas brings us this unique view of one of the world’s oldest Christian countries where culture, tradition and faith in Jesus Christ run deep. ~

Let us all pray that the Patriarch and the Holy Synod will remain immovable in their rejection of the unorthodox texts submitted for approval by the Council.

On the Proper Orthodox Stance Toward Heresy

Regarding the giving of a temple to the Papists on Patmos

On the Proper Orthodox stance toward heresy, with regard to the Patriarchate's push to give a holy temple to the followers of the Pope on the Holy Island of Patmos (see: http://panayiotistelevantos.blogspot.com.cy/2016/0...)

A friend wrote the following (to which I respond further down):

“To give away a holy site does not seem right. But a compromise might be to let Roman Catholics build their own modest chapel on the isle. In many places Orthodox and Catholics must share and cooperate in the Holy Land, especially. At the top of Mt Tabor, for example, is an older Catholic...

Ο Άγιος Ιουστίνος και ο Γέροντας Φιλόθεος περί της Πανορθοδόξου Συνόδου

St. Justin Popovich and Elder Philotheos (Zervakos) on the Pan Orthodox Council [in Greek]
