“Many have commented: “How is it that the Africans, being only recently baptized, can maintain such an intensity and exactness in their Orthodoxy, while many of us in parishes in Greece, America and elsewhere are much more lax?” The answer, I believe,...

Fr. George Florovsky on The Boundaries of the Church
by Athanasius Yevtich, bishop of Zahumlje and Herzegovina
Editor's Note
It is with gratefulness to God and relief that Orthodox Ethos is finally able to publish in the English language the following exceptional lecture by Bishop Athanasius Yevtich on the well-known and well-utilized article "On the Limits of the Church" by the ever-memorable patristic scholar and Orthodox Theologian, Fr. George Florovsky. For years, since shortly after its publication in the Greek Journal Theologia, we had seen the importance and need for a translation of this lecture for our English-speaking brethren. We are indebted to our friend and associate Nicholas Pantelopoulos for this excellent translation, which we know will be of great interest to many who have been confused or misled as to the Orthodox teaching on the nature and boundaries of the Church. Bishop Athanasius' contribution to the inter-Orthodox exchange on the proper understanding of the nature of the unity and boundaries of the Church is sure to be received with gratefulness by many and anguish by a few, but with interest by all.
~ Fr. Peter Heers, Editor of Orthodox Ethos
It will be difficult for me to duly expound on the magnitude and importance of Fr. George Florovsky, the “ecumenical first-priest”, as he was referred to by his student, bishop Daniel (Krstich).[1] Nonetheless, with great love and gratitude to God and to Fr. George, I will always remember when as a Priestmonk I served Divine Liturgy with this great father, celebrant and theologian, in a...
Defense and Declaration of Cessation of Commemoration of Bishop on Account of the Teaching of Heresy
Letter of Protopresbyter Theodore Zisis to Metropolitan Anthimos of Thessaloniki (March 3, 2017)
Orthodox Ethos is grateful to God to be asked to publish the translation of the declaration of cessation of commemoration of the honorable and upright Protopresbyter Theodore Zisis, submitted to his Metropolitan on the Sunday of Orthodoxy, giving his defense and explanation of the necessity for the drastic measure.
We hope all good-willed and interested Orthodox Christians will take the time to read the text and consider his arguments carefully, for if nothing else it will aid them in increasing their vigilance and watchfulness both for their soul's salvation as well as the unity of the Church and orthodoxy of Her confession - of which we are all co-responsible.

The Essential Problems with the Holy and Great Council
His Eminence Metropolitan Hierotheos of Nafpaktos and St. Vlasios
[Intervention addressed to the Hierarchs of the Church, May 2016]
The Great and Holy Council, which is due to gather in June of 2016 in Crete, was “the expectation” of many whose vision it was, and who tired in order to prepare for it, and now the Council finally moves towards its convocation. The question here put forth is whether the Holy and Great...
Does the Russian Orthodox Church Accept the “Mysteries” of the Heretics?
> “In the Orthodox Church alone is grace given through the sacraments (most other churches don’t even claim to have sacraments in any serious sense)...they (heretics) cannot be objectively Christian as belonging to the Body of Christ and receiving the grace of the sacraments.”
> “...To "lead a perfectly righteous life," as the questioner expressed it, means to live according to the commandments of the Beatitudes—which is beyond the power of one, outside the Orthodox Church, without the help of grace which is concealed within it.”
